Unusual Grisaille Composition

The practice of theorem painting became popular among women of relative leisure in the early 19th century, mostly in the northeast. Something of a misnomer, as “theorem” relates to mathematical formulae, the term was likely applied because of the utilization of multiple overlaid stencils in the process. This example, in grisaille, is noteworthy for the subject matter and the meticulous shading.
